A rule intended to protect members of the U.S. House and Senate from political attack is under attack from some in the conservative movement.GOP lawmakers have been taking the “fake news” moniker since their party gained control of the White House last year.
But the rule was designed to be applied only to lawmakers.
It was initially designed to protect incumbents, but Democrats took advantage of it to attack Republicans.
The Trump administration has already announced it is rolling out a new rule intended specifically to prevent that from happening.
Republicans have defended the rule as an attempt to protect the members of Congress who can be targeted.
“We’re going to protect all of our members of congress, not just the members who are vulnerable,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a recent interview with The Hill.
But conservatives have taken to social media to defend the rule, calling it an attempt by Democrats to take advantage of the rules’ flaws.
“You have an elected official in a position of power, and they’re attacking you, and you can’t take that as a legitimate attack because it’s not legitimate,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.
“The reason why the Democrats are attacking is because of the fact that they don’t want to see Republicans in a majority, they don´t want to win the House.
That’s why they’re going after the rule.””
The rule is really designed to put a wall around a certain portion of the party, and to make it impossible for the rest of the Republican Party to be in a situation where they can get the message out and the message is heard, because the Republican message has been rejected,” House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday.
McMorris Rodgers is also a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
McConnell has defended the GOP’s move, saying “the rules are not designed to discriminate against members of any party.
It’s designed to provide protections for the members that are going to be the face of our party.”
Democrats have slammed the rule and said it unfairly targets Republicans who are in high-profile positions, such as President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
“Democrats are using the fake news rule to target members of their own party, even though Republicans have been attacking Democrats for years,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in the House’s official response to the rule.
“The Democrats are using a political attack tactic designed to hurt Republicans while protecting the members in Congress who are actually doing the most to protect our country and our Constitution.”
Democrats and Republicans alike have called the rule a dangerous attempt to restrict free speech.
A rule designed to keep Republicans in power has become a political weapon.

But that provision has since been expanded to include all lawmakers.
“It has nothing to do with what happened last year,” House GOP leadership said in its response.
“This is a political tactic designed by the Democrats to get the Republicans in charge of the legislative process.”
The rule will come into effect when it goes into effect next week.
