The worst thing about being a strip club operator is that you are also a part of the problem, writes Stephanie Mott.
A man has been charged with raping and sexually assaulting two women in the Melbourne strip club industry.
The man, 21-year-old Darryl McManus, was arrested in Melbourne on Thursday and charged with rape and indecent assault.
He was later bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court next week.
“I think it’s an appalling thing that someone would do that to women,” Melbourne nightclub owner Emma Ritchie said.
Ms Ritchie says she’s also appalled by McManuses behaviour and said he’s been charged “like a criminal”.
“I’ve never seen that before.
It’s really disturbing,” she said.”
He was a young man, he didn’t know what was happening to him.”
The worst part of it was that he was still in a relationship with a woman.
“I’m just not going to sit here and look at him.”
Ms Mott says she has spoken to more than 20 other women who have reported being sexually assaulted by McMannus.
She said it was a particularly sad case for women who had recently begun to have relationships.
“(McMannuses) is a very intelligent young man,” she told ABC Melbourne.
“But I think he needs to be held to account for what he’s done.”
Mr McManuss was also charged with possession of indecent images of children and indecent acts with children.
According to the Australian Federal Police, McManUS was a 19-year old male who was arrested on October 5.
Police said he admitted to police that he had been a patron at the Melbourne breakfast club and said that he would be pleading not guilty to the charges.
Melbourne police confirmed that McManusk was a client of the women’s club.
Victorian Police said McManukes involvement in the incident was not being investigated as a crime.
McManus has been released on bail to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court next Thursday.
ABC Melbourne’s Stephanie Mowbray reports.
